UK Health and Safety Trends to Watch in 2024

What’s in Store For 2024?

As we dive into 2024, the health and safety industry is buzzing with new trends. At KODOBI, we're always on the lookout for forthcoming news and events, ensuring we keep your workplace safe, engaging and inclusive. So, let's take a look at what’s in store for 2024.

UK Health and Safety Trends to Watch in 2024

Workplace Mental Health Takes Center Stage

The spotlight in 2024 is firmly on mental health. With increasing recognition of the impact of mental well-being on overall productivity and safety, businesses are focusing on strategies to enhance employee mental health. This includes integrating stress management techniques, promoting work-life balance, and providing resources for mental health support. Remember, a workplace where everyone’s voice is heard is not just safer but also more innovative and successful. KODOBI are excited to be launching our Mental Health First Aid Courses this year, which has already shown significant interest from our existing global clients.

Engaging with the Building Safety Regulator

Since the Grenfell tragedy on 14th June 2017, there have been big changes in how we manage health and safety in buildings. The Building Safety Act introduces the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) to oversee these changes. For those managing buildings, especially the ones with higher risks, it's really important to work closely with the BSR. They're in charge of making sure buildings are safe and will act if safety rules aren't followed. This means it's more important than ever to understand and follow these safety standards closely. KODOBI will be assisting all existing clients to ensure that all internal procedures comply with The Building Safety Act and supporting legislation.

Ergonomics in the Era of Remote Work

As remote and hybrid work models continue to rise, so does the focus on ergonomics outside the traditional office. The challenge for 2024 is continuing to ensure that employees have an ergonomic setup at home, just like they would in an office. KODOBI’s virtual DSE assessment service ensures that your home office is as spine-friendly as your office desk. This includes proper seating, desk setup, and even recommendations for regular movement and breaks. Ergonomics in the home office aims to prevent musculoskeletal issues that can arise from prolonged sitting and poor posture. Wave goodbye to those home office aches and pains. Prevention is always better than cure.

Addressing the RAAC Challenge

Just like we had concerns with asbestos some years ago, concerns now turn to RAAC in buildings. RAAC or Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete is a lightweight, aerated concrete used in construction that can degrade over time, posing safety risks similar to those once associated with asbestos. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned that RAAC can be dangerous as it has potential to break down when least expected. If you suspect RAAC’s presence, it’s time to call in the experts – think building surveyors and structural engineers. Let's not wait for a crisis; proactive assessment is the key!

Proactive Health and Safety Management

Gone are the days of reactive safety measures. In 2024, it's all about being one step ahead. This involves regular risk assessments, health and safety audits, and a focus on identifying potential hazards before they become issues. It's about creating a culture where safety is a continuous, integral part of the workplace, not just a checklist item. Over the years of working in the industry, we have had various organisations contact us for our services as a result of an accident or incident which has been taken to court. This worry can easily be eradicated by simply calling one of our team to see how we maybe able to help.
